Meet Ashley

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I’m a transplant; originally from Hawaii. I’ve lived in the Killeen area off and on about 6 years. I’m a pharmacist at the Harker Heights HEB so if you’re there come and say hi!
How did you get interested in CrossFit? I wanted to do something more structured than a regular gym, a place I could get a full body workout but with people to help me stay accountable. Regular gyms weren’t giving me what I wanted out of a gym. I had been looking into trying out Crossfit but was nervous to try it. I finally did and all I regret is not starting sooner!
What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? The friends I’ve made are #1. I love the push we all give each other and the camaraderie between everyone.
Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? Ankle socks definitely!
It might sound funny but Crossfit has made my life easier, here is why… Overall I have more energy which makes each and every day a good day!
When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? I try to remember each time I leave the gym, the feeling of accomplishment! Remembering that gets me up and to the gym.
What is your least favorite movement? Burpee box jump overs
What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm? In my personal journey I want to continue to make improvements in everything I do.
What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or advice? Give it a shot! One hour can change your life! It did mine!
If there was an “Ashley” workout what would be included? Hang power cleans, overhead squats, and swimming.

Meet Nate

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Originally from Southeastern Wisconsin, I've been in the army for a little over 5 years as a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter Crew Chief. In my spare time, I like working on cars, traveling, playing music, reading, and hanging out with friends. I lost about 100 pounds after high school and have gone through periods of being in and out of shape since then. I joined Cataclysm in the fall of 2018 and fell in love with this gym and the amazing members and staff.

How did you get interested in CrossFit? I saw some compilation videos of the games on youtube and thought "doing stuff like that looks like fun." I found Cataclysm and gave it a shot. The super welcoming community, the upbeat music playing over the loudspeakers, and the intensity had me hooked instantly and I never looked back. I've met a ton of really great friends here, and I love seeing them in and out of the gym.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? My favorite thing about CrossFit is how much variety there is in it. You get to work on a ton of different areas of fitness, and it combines them in a really interesting way.

Tell me about your sock game... do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? I'm usually a mid sock type of guy. Like just above the ankle feels perfect for me. Except for rope climbs, you need longer socks for that. Learned that the hard way haha.

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why... CrossFit made my life easier because it feels like as I get better at doing these movements and get more in shape, everything else becomes easier. Picking things up and moving them around at work and in everyday life seems so much easier. I feel like I have a lot more energy and confidence than when I first started as well.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? Some days, the hardest part is just convincing myself to show up. When that's the case, I just remind myself that once I get in and start pushing myself, I'll feel so much better and accomplished because of it. Pushing myself through a tough workout and seeing myself become better is what makes this all worth it in the end.

What is your least favorite movement? Honestly, I hate wall balls. I've been getting better, and I have come to really respect the challenge, but doing them repeatedly for larger sets is something I am just not naturally very good at.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm? Lately, I've been putting a lot of focus on general barbell movements, trying to improve and gain strength with those. I also want to become more efficient during workouts. All in all, my focus is just improving my overall fitness right now and enjoying it in the process.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and is looking to get started? Any tips or advice? I'd tell them just to come in and give it a shot! There are people from all walks of life, ages, and fitness levels here all working alongside one another. Come in with an open mind and willing to learn. Listen to the coaches and your body and trust the process. And most of all, just have fun with it. It's okay to not be good at something when you're first starting out. Fitness is a journey, not an end goal.

If there was a "Nate" workout what would be included? Probably a 15ish minute workout with squat cleans, push-ups, and rowing in the middle.

Meet Stephanie

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I'm an Officer in the U.S. Army and I am stationed here at Ft. Hood. I have been living in Texas for almost two years now. Before I became a "CrossFitter," I was a dancer. That is why I am mostly known for dancing in between my sets at the gym haha.

How did you get interested in CrossFit? I became interested in CrossFit my Senior of College when I made the decision to join the Military. I wanted to prepare myself for the physical challenges I knew the Army would bring. What I didn't know at the time, is that it also prepared me mentally.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? My favorite thing about CrossFit is the community! When you join a CrossFit gym, you become part of a family. I have found some of my closest friends at CrossFit.

Tell me about your sock game... do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? Ankle socks all the way!

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why... I never have to think about what I'm going to do for a workout when I get to the gym. It's already programmed for you! All I have to do is show up and be told what to do!

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? Getting to see my friends at the gym! I go just to see my friends lol. If I don't go, then I miss them :(

What is your least favorite movement? THRUSTERS...

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm? My next goal I hope to achieve at CrossFit Cataclysm is really honing in on my nutrition and learning how nutrition plays a big role in your performance. I am working with the amazing Coach Mia on perfecting my nutrition!

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and is looking to get started? Any tips or advice? Just DO IT! (Just like Nike says lol). Everyone that asks me about CrossFit, I tell them just try it, because I promise you, you won't want to stop. I tell them don't be intimidated because every movement can be scaled. We are all at different levels in our fitness journey, and the experienced coaches are there to work with you! (ALSO this is my plug that I got current member Antonio Alaniz to join! He had never tried CrossFit until he met me...now he's addicted!)

If there was a "Stephanie" workout what would be included? I have actually thought of this before...it would include rope climbs, power cleans, running, kipping pull-ups.

Meet Tiffany

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Tiffany, I am 27 years old and I have three kids. I am from Hawaii and I live in Killeen. I am a nerd who is almost always sporting at least one piece of clothing which is Harry Potter related. I'm always running around with at least two kids following behind me.

How did you get interested in CrossFit? I was brought to CrossFit by Brittany Flake after we met during an Anatomy course at Central Texas College.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? My favorite thing about CrossFit is the community that will hold you accountable if you try and disappear.

Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? My socks are always ankle and some kind of character from Toy Story to Lion King to Rugrats.

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why… CrossFit has made my life easier by giving me sanity through physical fitness.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?  When my motivation is down I find the drive to come in by getting to see all the members and coaches. I am also motivated by being able to show my kids the importance of Physical Fitness and maintaining good health, plus I feel better for the rest of the day once I get that workout in.

What is your least favorite movement? My least favorite movement is push-ups... upper body strength is a work in progress.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm? My next goal is to continue increasing my upper body strength and progress to banded pull-ups on the rig.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and is looking to get started? Any tips or advice? CrossFit can seem so intimidating before coming into the gym but this group of people is so amazing, supportive, and non-judgmental. Once you come in and try it out the support and motivation will keep you coming back. Everyone is proud of one another and no matter where you are starting all the members will cheer you on! Do not worry or stress about having to be the best just keep coming in and you will improve.

If there was a “Tiffany” workout what would be included? A Tiffany workout would include the row machine, air squats, and burpees because these are some of the movements I have been able to improve most on since starting CrossFit.

Meet Emily

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Emily Wolf, 29 with the mobility of an 84 year old. Former soccer and rugby player with the injuries to prove it. Aviation captain that enjoys making sawdust in the garage and owns too many cats.

How did you get interested in CrossFit? Watched and rewatched the Fittest on Earth doc in 2016. I was just in awe of these athletes and the sheer amount of work they could accomplish across such broad domains.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? Far and away, the best thing about CrossFit is the community it engenders. Athletes of every shape, size, and skill level that all suffer together. Everyday is a new challenge and there’s always someone next to you when it comes time to tackle it.

Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? Ankle socks with leggings, but mid calf with shorts. No exceptions - I’ll wear stinky socks before deviating.

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why… It took the guesswork out of the gym.Brilliant sadists make the programming, Coaches leave no movement unexplained, and the class environment creates this positive peer pressure to put in your best effort. All that’s left is to show up.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? I focus on how it will feel when I’m walking out the door after the workout: that accomplished exhaustion. It’s just a matter of investing in that future state.

What is your least favorite movement? Burpees. It’s cardio purgatory and no one can convince me otherwise.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm? Focus on mobility and achieve something that resembles an overhead squat position.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or advice? Just show up. The hardest part is walking in the door the first time and doing the “hi, I’m new” dance. CrossFit fosters incredibly passionate and knowledgeable coaches that have the unique ability to adapt any movement- just be willing to try.

If there was an “Emily” workout what would be included? A chipper with sit ups, row, KBS, and maybe some pull-ups thrown in there

Meet Donovan.

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Donovan and I was born and raised in Killeen, Texas. I am engaged with a 3 year old daughter who is the center of my universe. I have been a real estate agent for the past 3 years but have moved into a much more rewarding position at Graham Team Realtors. I now work as a Team Lead where my main focus is training and growing other agents into successful real estate agents. I am fiercely driven to accomplish goals so I tend to be a bit of a workaholic. When I do have time outside of work, I spend that time with my family, friends, and as of June of 2019, torturing myself at CrossFit Cataclysm.

How did you get interested in CrossFit? I have been a fan of CrossFit for years but never really thought I could do it. I found out about CFC from my friends (and current CFC members) Genevieve and Cherie. They tried convincing me to join for months but I was reluctant. So to guilt trip me into joining, they paid for my first month with CFC. After just one class, I was hooked.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? I love the challenge. There are not many things that you get to do daily that challenges you the way CrossFit does.

Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? Ankle, it’s too hot to be wearing leg warmers.

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why… It has given me a great outlet to relieve stress. When you’re focusing on breathing so you don’t pass out on the floor, you can’t really think about things that stress you out.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? I never really lose motivation because I don’t see Crossfit as something I have to do. I love every second I get to be in the gym and if time would allow for it, I’d be there longer.

What is your least favorite movement? Assault Bike. I’d rather do burpees in traffic.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm? I want to be able to perform more gymnastic movements consistently. Pull up variations, muscle ups, and T2B. I’d also like to get my nutrition right so I can perform better.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or advice?
Don’t waste any more time and get started today! There is nothing else that is more rewarding than pushing yourself to your limits every day and being supported by a community that just wants to see you be better. You will regret all the time you wasted not joining earlier. (Refer to question 2 to ask me how I know)

If there was a “Donovan” workout what would be included? A long grinder WOD with running, rope climbs, burpees, and power cleans.

Meet Lister

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I was born and raised in Maine. I'm a Mom of 4, all of whom are mostly grown, and all of whom I consider to be my greatest accomplishments. They are fabulously infuriating, independent, wonderful humans. I have been happily married to an Army JAG (yes, everything they say about lawyers is true) for over 28 years and we've lived and traveled all over the world. I fill my "almost" empty nester days as a nutrition coach. My love for travel is insatiable and I will jump at the chance to go just about anywhere.

How did you get interested in Crossfit? I'm not going to lie, I was looking for an excuse to ditch running and tenacious friends dragged my skeptical behind into a local box. I was instantly hooked.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit? The constantly varied workouts keep workouts from being boring. I also like the ability to scale a movement if needed. Don't get me wrong, I love RX'ing a WOD as much as anyone, but the reality is, I shouldn't let ego be the driving force. If I can't do the movement well, or lift the prescribed weight, there is always a way to scale that will still find a way to kick my behind.

Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks? Ankle

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why… It keeps me "functionally fit".  I refuse to be limited by my age or use it as an excuse (by I will keep trying Coach....sorry).

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? I don't typically lack motivation when it comes to Crossfit. I don't 'have to' go work out, I 'get to', which as I get older, I appreciate more and more

What is your least favorite movement? Easy....the Snatch.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm? I would love to be able to handstand walk right into our next duty station. Of course, that means I'd have to start practicing.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and is looking to get started? Any tips or advice? It's scary to try something new. To be blunt, so what...suck it up. "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow" -Emerson

If there was a “Lister” workout what would be included? A long a** WOD that includes runs, handstand push-ups, and pull-ups.

Meet Paul

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, my name is Paul and I’m a Crossfitter. I’ve been a part of CrossFit Cataclysm for a little over a year. I'm a 32 year old, engaged (until December), dad of 3. My every day 9-5 is working at a music store as a repair tech. But baseball has always been a passion and when playing was no longer something viable, I became an umpire.

How did you get interested in CrossFit?
The box is across the street from my job. I would always see people running up and down the street and knew that I needed to do something to not only become more fit but be able to be consist and accountable. As an umpire I needed to “look good in uniform” and be able to keep up with college athletes. I saw CrossFit as a way to help.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?
For one hour a day I’m able to focus on myself. Sounds super selfish, but sometimes that’s ok.

Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle, mid, or high socks?
My normal workout sock would be the boring ankle sock, but for my daily wear I get as crazy as I can. Love the polka dots and as much floral print as possible!

It might sound funny but CrossFit has made my life easier, here is why…
EASIER?!? No way. Honestly, the energy I’ve gained from being consistent in CrossFit makes my day to day life easier.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?
That’s what she said.

What is your least favorite movement?
Assault bike. It crushes my soul.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm?
My goals are to rx more work outs. Everyday’s a PR!

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
Change your mind set, the media doesn’t show the “average” CrossFit person. Yes, it’s going to hurt, but that’s ok. You don’t have to be comfortable all the time. Tips: it’s ok to scale.

If there was a “Paul” workout what would be included?
Rebound for time!

Meet Jenna

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I was born and raised in Holland, Michigan. Married my husband Casey right after high school as he had joined the Army, and we’ve been living the military life for the past 12 years. We have two kids, Jayden(16) and Makennah(11), who keep me plenty busy with their activities. I went to school for Dental Assisting while we were Stationed in Alaska, and have assisted for the past 6 years. I hope to go back to school for Dental Hygiene in the future. Outside of the gym I just enjoy spending time with friends and family.

How did you get interested in Crossfit?
I became interested in Crossfit several years, but was always too chicken to try it. When we moved to Indiana in 2015 I really wanted to live a healthier lifestyle and better myself, so I finally gave it a try. I started my crossfit journey at Hoosier Crossfit in Bloomington, IN October 2015 and its changed my life. When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? I feel guilty if I don’t go and it throws my whole day off. The hardest part is getting out of bed! I always feel so much better after I go, and I look forward to seeing “my people”.

What is your least favorite movement?
All overhead...I always fear dropping the bar on my head.
What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?

Getting back in shape after being “lost” for a little while, and continuing to be able to do more RX wods.
What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
DON’T BE A CHICKEN!!!😊 Just try it, ANYONE can do it! Don’t settle for the first gym you find, check them all out and make sure you find the best fit for you. Most of all HAVE FUN!!!!

Meet Jessica

Picture
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am an attorney in the Army and a mother of four great kids. We have three dogs, two cats, and it is usually a madhouse when we are at home. I love languages, traveling, and exposing my kids to different sports and activities.

How did you get interested in Crossfit?

My husband introduced me to CrossFit a couple of years ago, but I didn’t like the negative stigma associated with it and with two hurt shoulders and no one showing me how to scale the movements, CrossFit wasn’t for me. When we moved to TX, I decided to give it another try. CrossFit Cataclysm changed my perception of CrossFit. The coaches and people are great, the coaches give multiple options to scale based on your ability and limitations, and no one makes you feel bad about doing it.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?

My 5:00am people. We are each-others motivation. And I know it will be worth it afterwards.

What is your least favorite movement?

Overhead squats. I don’t know if I will ever get passed the baby bar.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
Maintaining overall fitness while working towards my personal running goal. Additionally, I hope to RX more workouts in the future.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?

Just do it! CrossFit is for everyone, no matter your fitness level. The coaches will teach you the movements and help you determine what weight and movement is appropriate.
