Meet RJ

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am originally from Southern Maryland. I got stationed at Ft. Hood in 2014 and have been here since. I got out of the Army in August of 2017. I started coming to CFC in 2015 and haven’t looked back since. I’m lucky enough to work out and also work at CFC.
How did you get interested in Crossfit?
I first heard about Crossfit when I was in high school from my wrestling coach. I thought it sounded weird. I didn’t actually start doing Crossfit until early 2015 after I started watching the Games and thought “hey, I can do that”. Not knowing how hard it actually is…..
When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?
I just tell myself to get to the gym. I know that once I get to the gym, things will take care of itself. Being around everyone else is all the motivation I need to get my workout done.
What is your least favorite movement?
Double Unders!! I can never find my rhythm.
What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
To qualify for one of the new Crossfit-sanctioned events, either as an individual or on a team.
What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
Just get started. Find a gym, preferably ours, and come in. Everyone thinks that you have to be “in shape” to do Crossfit, but that is far from the truth. Crossfit is for those people who are not “in shape” so they can get “in shape”. Crossfit is also for those people who are “in shape” and want to be more “in shape”. Crossfit is for everyone.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m originally from Boston. I moved here with my now-husband Kevin in March of 2016, and I’m a law student at Baylor Law School in Waco.

How did you get interested in Crossfit?
When I was in college I started lifting weights a little - squatting, cleaning, push press, etc. Kevin knew of Crossfit from ROTC, and recommended that I try it. I always enjoyed being in a class setting more than working out on my own, so I thought Crossfit might be a good fit for me. In July 2015 I joined a box back home in Boston, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?

Hardly anyone I go to law school with works out because of how demanding our courses are, so I definitely feel the pressure to just go home and get started on my work. However, I know that if I skip out on my workout for the day I’ll regret it, and I look forward to taking that hour to think about something other than law school. I try to think about the progress I’ve made, the goals I’m still trying to achieve, and the way I’ll feel after I get that hour of work in.

What is your least favorite movement?
WALL. BALLS.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
I want to improve my snatch and get my first ring muscle up.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
As cliche as it may sound, Crossfit really is for everyone. It can be discouraging at first - when I first started I remember seeing everyone with pull ups, toes to bar, double unders - all of these skills that I never thought I would get, and that was hard because I wanted to be “good” right away. But these are not easy movements, and while they may come easier to some than others, everyone has something to work on. If you give it a try and stick to it, you will surprise yourself with how much you can do.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Born and raised in Temple, TX (my only claim to fame). GO WILDCATS! I am the mother to two amazing daughters and grandmother to only the coolest kid on the planet! Current record holder for what seems like the worlds longest engagement - 8 yrs and counting. I've got mad skills in the kitchen and with a paintbrush... Ohhhh and I throw a pretty killer Halloween party.
How did you get interested in Crossfit?
I was so over having multiple fitness memberships around town... boxing, boot camp, swimming. I couldn't stay consistent so I couldn't see results. Do you have any idea what that does to the psyche?!

I had done crossfit style workouts at boot camp and I loved and hated it all at the same time so I decided to check out a few local crossfit boxes and potentially cancel all my other memberships.
Let me just say, "20 minute no sweat intro" MY ASS!  An hour and a half long panel interview with Josh, Dan and Kat, PLUS burpees, the assault bike, and a run. I walked away from that thoroughly impressed and saying, "please, take my money and let me be a part of this... PLEASE"

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?
MY BIGGEST MOTIVATION IS Ashley Heil's text every morning telling me to get my ass up and at the gym.
Friendships like that are a common thing here and I adore that about this place. They want better for me and how can you not be motivated by that?!

What is your least favorite movement?
Overhead squats are the damn death of me. Those bastards humble me with a quickness.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
My goals as far as movement goes are double unders, pull ups, burpess without crying, and if I can fit in a handstand or two I'd be cool with that.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
It's not uncommon to hear people say things like "Oh, I need to lose weight or get into better shape before I do crossfit." What they don't realize is that crossfit is not for the elite. It truly is for everyone! If my chunky monkey ass could do crossfit weighing over 250 lbs (down over 40lbs because of crossfit, by the way) then you can do crossfit.

Yes, it's hard, and sometimes you can't differentiate between tears and sweat, but it's AMAZING! It's the best feeling in the world. It's a high like no other.  Your only competition is yourself and you will constantly amaze yourself.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I come from a military family so I've lived in many different places but have always considered Grand Forks, ND as home since that's where most of my family lives.
I was a competitive gymnast for about 8 years. I graduated from Harker Heights High School in 2007, which is where I now teach math and have been for the past 5 years!
In my spare time (aside from work and the gym) I enjoy spending time with my husband and dogs, I like puzzles, playing video games (WoW mostly:)), and thinking about training/working out. Lol

How did you get interested in Crossfit?
In 2012 I remember watching the crossfit games on TV. I had already been weight training; bodybuilding stuff, Squats, dead lifts, and bench. So when I saw what Crossfit was and how it combined lifting and gymnastic elements I thought it looked like so much fun! I went to a foundations class later that year in Dec and got hooked.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?
The people/community at the gym. I know that if I just show up I'll get motivated by something or someone. Seeing other people push themselves, hearing words of encouragement, someone making me laugh or smile, knowing I won't be there alone are all things that motivate me.

What is your least favorite movement?
I used to hate burpees and wallballs. Lately, I don't have a least favorite movement. I know that everything I do at the gym will make me better :)

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
I want to qualify to compete on a bigger stage (Granite Games, Wodapalooza, Fittest Experience, Regionals etc) either as an individual or on a team.

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?

Just go for it! My best advice for a beginner is to trust your coach and don't let what you can't do (YET!) get to you. Focus on what you can do and keep a positive attitude!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born and raised in Oakland California and lived most of my life here in Texas. I graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelors in Education and I am currently a Kindergarten teacher. I got married last April to the most amazing man that also enjoys crossfit as much as I do! We have two dogs that we love so much named RJ and Mia! I also enjoy dancing, traveling, food, and sports!

How did you get interested in Crossfit?
One of my best friends asked me to go with her one day. I felt a little uncomfortable at first, but I did my best to keep going and then I fell in love with it!

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?
I honestly keep going because it helps me mentally distress from a long day. I love that I am consistently taking care of my mind and body every day. It is very therapeutic for me. Crossfit is a challenge both mentally and physically and I love stepping out of my comfort zone.

What is your least favorite movement?
Overhead squats!

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
I’m hoping my endurance and stamina continue to get better. I also would like to accomplish hand stand walks and a bar muscle up!

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
I would say to go in with a clear mind and give it a shot. Experiences make a difference on how you perceive things. I always recommend people to just try it out and evaluate how they feel after attempting more than just one day. The biggest thing is consistency and I encourage people to have that mindset.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am married to a strong athlete and soldier(Carlos). I am a mom of four wonderful kids.
Born in Miami raised in a small island Puerto Rico.
Quiet but adventurous.
Love to read.

How did you get interested in Crossfit?
When my husband got orders to Fort Hood,Texas back in 2008, I was introduced in 2011 to Centurion Cross fit from a friend. My first day I will never forget, 400 meter walking lunges! You know how I woke up for the next two weeks. I  barely could walk, but for some reason I kept going.

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in?
I think that we all go true ups and down its just finding that reason why are you doing what you doing? What ignites you to this? My first reason is myself, I want to be better than I was yesterday. My second reason is my husband I always see him dedicated and motivated so it keeps me aware to take care of myself. My third reason my kids they keep me always moving they love when mommy hits the gym and fourth I love to surround myself with strong athletes and coaches it keeps me going.

What is your least favorite movement?
Burpees

Running

What is the next goal you hope to reach with Crossfit Cataclysm?
Pull Ups and toes to bar

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started? Any tips or Advice?
To be patient with your body cause it take time to adjust and learn certain movement specially when you are introducing your body to new movements.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm married to Kelsey, and we have two adorable pups named Riley and Kali! I graduated from Texas A&M-College Station in 2015 and began working as a high school Geography teacher at Ellison. I'm a huge sports fan who loves pretty much any sport, but my top teams are San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Angels, and Dallas Cowboys. I love to travel and eat!

How did you get interested in CrossFit?
My sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and a former coworker introduced me to CrossFit back in 2015. I stuck to running (half-marathons and marathons) and lifting weights on my own for a while, but decided to take the plunge in July 2017 to get a little bit more serious about my fitness goals. I've loved it ever since!

When your motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and come in? Working out is a big stress reliever, so after a long day of dealing with teenagers it's a way to relax. I also love the community at the gym, so I look forward to seeing all of my friends when I come in.

What is your least favorite movement?
Thrusters. They're evil.

What is the next goal you hope to reach with CrossFit Cataclysm?
To hit #200 on my snatch!

What would you say to someone that has never tried CrossFit and looking to get started?
Any tips or advice? I would tell them that CrossFit IS for everyone because you can change it up to fit your needs. It helps you with everyday life. It'll kick your ass, but you will love yourself after, and the community makes it totally worth it! The coaches help you push through no matter what. Plus it's fun to try new things that you normally wouldn't do on your own in a gym setting, and you'll surprise yourself!

Tell us a little about yourself.
Born and raised in Indiana where I met my husband. We got married right after I graduated high school & have been married now for 7 years!!! We have 3 awesome kids who are full of energy! We moved to the fort hood area almost a year and a half ago and we are enjoying Texas as much as we can with this crazy heat.

How did you get started in Crossfit?
I always heard of crossfit and found it super intimidating. But after having my second son I knew I had to get in the gym, I wasn’t wanting to do workouts on machines or by myself. So I thought I would give crossfit a try. After my first day I was hooked. And I was actually pumped and motivated to keep going.

When motivation is down, how do you find the drive to get up and get work done?
The days I’m feeling the worst are my best days in the gym. I love coming in and being able to focus just on my workout and not the complications going on around me. I keep telling myself everyday I get better as long as I stick to it. I took over a year off when I was pregnant and getting back into it was so hard! But I knew if I wanted to be better & stronger I needed to keep coming.

What is your least favorite movement?
Overhead squats!!

What are you next big goals to with over here with us?
Handstand push-ups! & eventually a muscle up!

What would you say to someone thinking about trying Crossfit?
Seriously, just try it!! The workouts are rough, but you will feel so great after! It’s amazing how much you will improve just after a couple months! & Stay positive!!
