I’m a kindergarten teacher and momma to three, and am married to a very athletic guy. Nic has lifted weights for years and I have always struggled with consistently working out because I get bored. My past workout style, pre crossfit, was doing cardio for hours on end…YUCK! I always thought I was fairly in shape, and play recreational soccer, but never realized how out of shape I was until I tried Crossfit.
How did you get interested in Crossfit?
My dear friend Lacey invited me to a few community WODs at Cataclysm and I LOVED it…..even though I was terrible at it at first. I loved the community aspect and the feeling of belonging, and the way that every workout was different. I loved putting weight on a bar…that’s still one of my favorite things to do. There is something so empowering about PR’ing with a barbell…and seeing myself be able to do something that I wasn’t able to do the week before.
When your motivation is down, how do find the drive to get up and come in?
I know that my 5am ladies/guys will hold me accountable. These amazing people have become a second family to me and I genuinely miss the heck out of them when I can’t make it due to early morning soccer practices (I make up the time in open gym…..but nothing compares to my class family). When I am having a down day, it all changes as soon as I walk in the door and hear the “good mornings” from my peeps. I know that I will always feel better after class.
What is your least favorite movement?
Oh mercy…..Overhead Squats….I will conquer them. Ha! They were a major weakness that I didn’t truly discover until the Open this year and I am determined to get at least a 35# overhead squat this summer.
What is your next goal that Crossfit Cataclysm can help you reach?
Other than the overhead squat, I want to be able to increase my back squat by 10# and my clean and jerk by 10# by the end of the summer. I’m excited to know that I’m going to be able to be in the gym more outside of class time during the summer and can’t wait to grow some muscles.
What would you say to someone that has never tried Crossfit and is looking to get started? Tips, advice?
Just do it! Come in knowing that this is going to be good for your soul, your heart, your mind, and not just your body. Leave your ego at the door and don’t compare yourself to anyone else. As the amazing 5am mama Brenda has told me, “Comparison is the thief of joy”……I can only compare myself to who I was yesterday and know that I’m a better version today. I hope you can give it a try and get started…you’ll be amazed at how much Crossfit can change your whole life.
