This month we’d like to introduce one of our earliest members to you. He’s a truly great guy who’s a lot of fun to workout with. We know you’ve seen him around the gym, always wearing a big smile and giving his all for every workout. Now we want to tell you a little bit more about our friend and community member Tim Manges.
Josh: Tim, can you tell us a bit about your background?
Tim: I am a former soldier, currently serving as a Killeen police officer. I’ve spent over 20 in competitive shooting, where I competed in a World Championship and several World Cups. One of the best parts of being a competitive shooter is that it allowed me to travel all over the U.S. and Europe.
Josh: How did you become interested in CF?
Tim: I became interested in CrossFit when I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012. Camp Phoenix had a large, dedicated CrossFit box with a very active program. They even held some individual and team competitions that included teams from ISAF member countries and the US Embassy team. After going to the first class, I was hooked.
Josh: When your motivation is down, what inspires you to come in and give it you all?
Tim: It’s embarrassing to say, but my motivation comes from getting older and not being able to do the things I use to be able to do. I do not want to become an old guy that can’t move. I want to be the guy that is still lifting weights and running and doing CrossFit when I’m in my 60’s.
Josh: Do you have a favorite workout?
Tim: My favorite workout is Annie and anything with a barbell….except bar facing burpees. Those suck!
Josh: What would you say to someone thinking about trying CrossFit without any experience? Do you have any tips or general advice?
Tim: I would say do CrossFit to make yourself better. Fitness isn’t always about how much you can lift or how fast or far you can run. It’s about making your life better. As far as tip or general advise….embrace being sore all the time.
